It is the best night of the year... speeches will be made (and we will unfortunately have to listen to them), fun surprises will occur, and Conan may just be the perfect host. Movie clips will also be played, what a joy, and Emilia Perez will likely and unfortunately win a few awards. We are going to preview the bigger awards of the night: the acting awards, as well as the biggest award of the night... The Best Picture of 2024.

Best Actor - The Nominees

Ralph Fiennes - Conclave

Sebastian Stan - The Apprentice

timothee Chalamet - A Complete Unknown

Colman Domingo - Sing Sing

Adrien Brody - The Brutalist

The Favorite - Adrien Brody

The Hope - Timothee Chalamet

Adrien Brody is probably the only thing I truly loved about The Brutalist. And that is a lotttttt of movie he has to carry. That being said I wanna see history be made; and what a way to make history than by having someone beat out the prior history-maker. I also think Timothee deserves his roses for having two incredible performances as Bob Dylan and Paul Atreides. He also gave a great speech about being one of the greats at the SAG awards...give the young man his Oscar and make some history tonight.

Best Actress- The Nominees

Fernanda Torres - I'm Still Here

Demi Moore - The Substance

Karla Sofia Gascon - Emilia Perez

Cynthia Erivo - Wicked

Mikey Madison - Anora

The Favorite - Demi Moore

The Hope - Mikey Madison

This is tough because I have not seen The Substance... it's just not my kind of movie. Demi Moore is very on-brand for the type of winner that's usually at the Oscars. I immediately think of Viola Davis's win, or Jamie Lee Curtis a few years ago, as well as Emma Stone last year. The Academy tends to gravitate towards those known commodities like Demi, so I can't see this going to any other individual. That being said, Mikey Madison was genuinely terrific and carried her movie so I do wish she got the nod here. All the acting awards tend to have a bit of politics to them even more-so than the rest of the show's awards. Hopefully one day we just start picking the person who was indeed the Best Actor/ Actress that year.

Best Supporting Actress - The Nominees

Zoe Saldana - Emilia Perez

Felicity Jones - The Brutalist

Monica Barbaro - A Complete Unknown

Ariana Grande - Wicked

Isabella Rossellini - Conclave

The Favorite - Zoe Saldana

The Hope - Ariana Grande

I truly hate Emilia Perez, I don't know anyone who liked Emilia Perez, and therefore I hope it wins absolutely zero awards tonight. That being said Zoe has this one locked up with what looks like no surprise incoming. Which I guess is fine, because she does a lot. I think Ariana deserves the nod because I think she embodies everything about Glinda in her performance, is genuinely so so funny and musically is incredible (obviously). Rosselini and Barbaro are both standouts as well! Please just don't give Emilia Perez any awards, I beg of you!

Best Supporting Actor - The Nominees

Kieren Culkin - A Real Pain

Edward Norton - A Complete Unknown

Yura Borisov - Anora

Guy Pearce - The Brutalist

Jeremy Strong- The Apprentice

The Favorite - Kieren Culkin

The Hope - Yura Borisov

Kieren Culkin is a supposed lock for tonight. My only issue with that is that this character is the same guy as Roman Roy, which tells me that they're just both Kieren Culkin. Personally I feel like Yura is the lifeblood of Anora and really co-carries that movie with Mikey. From my SAG patient, he is also the best actor here as he is able to portray a lot without saying a lot throughout the movie. The SAG community has spoken (through one single individual), Yura should win. Kieren's speech is gonna be so meh when he wins too, bummer.

Best Picture: The Nominees

  • Anora

  • Conclave

  • The Brutalist

  • A Complete Unknown

  • Emilia Perez

  • Wicked

  • Dune: Part Two

  • The Substance

  • Nickel Boys

  • I'm Still Here

The Favorites - Anora, Conclave, The Brutalist

The Hope - Dune Part Two

This year, I did not have any Everything Everywhere All at Once films, aka I didn't have one film that truly blew me away. Also, I think Anora/Conclave/The Brutalist are all very good, but at the same time I think they probably would've finished middle of the pack in voting each of the last two years. When I compare the three of them to movies like Oppenheimer, Barbie (yes Barbie), Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Top Gun: Maverick, EEAOO, I don't think they're on that level. Dune: Part Two was still the best time I had at the movies this year, and not just because the first viewing was in 4DX where the seats were violently moving around the entire time. Villeneuve is just on a different level, and I think he deserves the same respect Peter Jackson got for adapting Lord Of The Rings. I think he'll end up getting some sort of pity win for the third Dune adaptation, but this is a very classic Hollywood move that Dune is not a favorite for the Best Picture this year. Aside from my wishful thinking, I do hope Anora wins out of the favorites trio, as that was a really hilarious, fun movie that was made super well. Conclave is a great second as well.
